Tips on Makeup for contact lens wearers

Getting makeup in your eye is annoying, but it’s even worse if you are wearing contact lenses. Here are some easy tips to follow to keep you safe while looking great:
- Always wash your hands before handling your contact lenses. Oils from the skin can easily be transferred to your lenses.
- Put your contacts in before you put your makeup on. Take the lenses out before you remove your makeup.
- Use oil-free, water-based products. Cream eye shadow is less likely to get in your eye than powder. Avoid glitter powder shadow which contains the rock mica.
- If you prefer powder, keep your eyes closed during application. Then, brush off any excess powder before opening your eyes.
- Stay away from the eyelid edge where there are glands which secrete into your tears. If they become plugged it can lead to an eye infection. Apply eyeliner only on the portion of your lashes that is well away from the surface of your eye. If you enjoy using eyeliner, using a pencil one is better, because they flake less than liquid and gel liners.
- Mascara must be water-soluble, hypo-allergenic, and non-clumping. Waterproof mascaras and ones with fibers can get under your contact and act like a piece of sand scratching your cornea.
- Use lid wipes or a mild soap/cleanser to remove your makeup. You want to be gentle around your eyes to avoid stretching and damaging the tissues.
- If you use any sprays (hairspray, deodorants, facial mists) close your eyes, spray, then go into another room. Particles can linger in the air and adhere to your lenses.
- Replace your makeup frequently and clean your brushes with a mild soap weekly.
- Clean your contacts diligently every night or try daily disposable lenses.
